Exhibition Jazz – Extended

The exhibition “JAZZ” arose from the compilation of a small part of the drawings that the painter and architect Julián García Hernández has been making every day since 2017. Jazz musicians are the central element of his work. The expressionist abstraction of his ink strokes will use black and white photographic sections as a structural element of the composition. This spreads freely in each work and gives shape to a collection of small pieces. Their execution is as random as intended.

The improvisation of the stroke over a main structure thus appears, as in jazz, as an essential work element. Even the way the work is created means that not all drawings are good when they are finished, in the author’s opinion. In this sense, saxophonist Sonny Rollins once said, “This is not pop, boy, this is jazz, this is real music. There are no plywood emotions, things happen. People are constantly hurt, laughing and crying.”
The three larger works on display add the novelty of a much more linear and elaborate drawing to the techniques already described. The contrast between the gestural outlines of the audience at the bottom of the paintings and the linear drawing given to the musicians may be related to the artist’s architectural training and his desire to depict them in a much more leisurely and analytical way.
