Stories of Little and Big Blossoms addresses feelings such as being a stranger when moving to a new country or the pain of losing a loved one, focusing on children’s point of view. For example, there is little Elham from Iran, who once again has to start with her family in a new place, and for whom everything is foreign in the new city: the streets, the houses, the playground. At school, she feels excluded and insecure, and finds it difficult to make new friends. In Stories of Little and Big Blossoms, Shirin Azari deals with her own childhood and adolescence. In 1996, she fled overnight with her parents and brother from Iran to Germany without being able to say goodbye to family and friends. She attended eleven different schools there and suffered from never living in a fixed place any longer. The feeling of insecurity and restlessness ran like a red thread through Shirin Azari’s life until she began to record her findings in stories for children. The experiences of Elham, Jonathan or Aylin, illustrated by the author with delicate, poetic drawings, reflect her experience of never being allowed to put down roots in one place and is an invitation to openness and courage. The stories are intended to draw attention to the most innocent of all those affected, the children.
